Lilium davidii (David's lily) is a bulbous perennial native to western China (Gansu, Guizhou, Henan, Hubei, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Sichuan, Yunnan), growing in mountain meadows and scrub. The bulb produces a single unbranched stem clothed in numerous narrow, linear leaves arranged spirally. From mid to late summer it bears a loose cluster of pendent, Turk's-cap-shaped flowers with strongly reflexed tepals, red to orange, heavily spotted with purplish-brown. It grows in sun to part shade, in cool, humus-rich, well-drained soil, becoming dormant in winter after flowering.
