Lilium hybride

Category photo (no photo of its own for this entry)
This entry refers to a lily hybrid (Lilium), the product of extensive 20th-century breeding programmes that crossed botanical species from Asia, Europe and North America to create today's horticultural groups (Asiatic, Oriental, Trumpet, OT, etc.). These scaly-bulbed perennials produce an upright stem clothed in lance-shaped leaves and, in summer, large, spectacular bowl-, trumpet- or star-shaped flowers in a wide range of colours, sometimes fragrant depending on the parent group. Hybrid lilies require cool, rich, well-drained soil, a sunny to partly shaded position, and roots protected from excessive heat.
