Lycoris haywardii

Lycoris haywardii is a garden hybrid (L. sprengeri × L. radiata var. pumila) in the Amaryllidaceae, often called a 'surprise lily' for its bare-stemmed flowering habit. The underground bulb produces foliage that emerges in late autumn, grows through winter and spring, then dies back in early summer. In late summer, a leafless stem suddenly appears bearing an umbel of funnel-shaped, magenta-pink flowers tipped with purple-blue. It grows best in sun with light afternoon shade, in well-drained soil, and rests dormant over summer.
