Lycoris × rosea is a recognised hybrid between Lycoris radiata var. pumila and Lycoris sprengeri, described by Hamilton Traub in 1957 from bulbs imported from China. Like its parents, it is a bulbous geophyte whose foliage appears separately from flowering. In summer, before the leaves emerge, leafless stems bear umbels of flowers with strongly wavy, recurved tepals, pink to magenta, tipped with electric blue - a trait inherited from L. sprengeri, softened by the influence of L. radiata. It is one of the earliest-flowering Lycoris. It requires rich, well-drained soil and a sunny to partly shaded position, with a summer dormancy free of excess moisture.
