Anigozanthos manglesii (Haemodoraceae), the red and green kangaroo paw, is the floral emblem of Western Australia, where it grows in poor, sandy soils. This rhizomatous perennial forms a rosette of strap-shaped leaves from which, in spring, dark red, hairy stems rise bearing tubular, paw-shaped flowers tipped bright green, rich in nectar and bird-pollinated. Grow in full sun, in well-drained, poor soil; sensitive to waterlogging and frost.
