Melasphærula graminea

The correct genus name is Melasphaerula (the ligature 'æ' corresponding to 'ae'); the epithet 'graminea' does not correspond to any recognized botanical name, the sole species in the genus being Melasphaerula ramosa, known as 'fairy bells.' Native to the winter-rainfall regions of southern Africa, from Namibia to the Cape, it is a bulbous perennial with fine, fan-shaped leaves resembling those of a freesia. In spring, a slender, branching stem bears a cascade of small, pendulous, pale yellow to cream flowers with a faint musky scent. It grows well in full sun, in well-drained soil, with a dry summer rest period.
