Merendera sobolifera

Native to a range extending from Eastern Europe to Iran and Russian Turkestan, Merendera sobolifera (closely related to autumn crocus, family Colchicaceae) grows in moist grassy sites on sandy soil up to 1000 m elevation. Its cylindrical, stoloniferous bulb, 7-9 cm long, is planted horizontally. Two to three linear leaves accompany, in early spring, one to three pink to light-purple flowers with linear-elliptic tepal lobes 2-4 cm long. Flowering spans March to May depending on climate. The genus is now often merged by botanists into Colchicum.
