Micranthus alopecuroides

Endemic to the Western Cape, South Africa, Micranthus alopecuroides is the type species of the genus Micranthus, an Iridaceae entirely confined to the Cape Province. This cormous geophyte reaches 40 cm, with sword-shaped leaves showing a distinct midvein. It produces tight, two-ranked spikes of small pale to deep blue flowers, surrounded by dry, rigid, brown bracts with broad membranous margins. It grows in sandy, sandstone-derived soil, often in damp spots, and flowers in early summer. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
