Micranthus sp? ‘ Betty’s Bay’

The precise species of this Micranthus, offered under the locality name 'Betty's Bay' (Western Cape, South Africa), could not be confirmed with certainty; the description is therefore given at genus level. Micranthus is a small cormous Iridaceae genus endemic to the Cape Floristic Region, ranging from the Bokkeveld Mountains to Port Elizabeth, comprising seven species nicknamed "comb flowers" for their dense, two-ranked spikes. It grows mainly on sandy soils, often in damp places, and flowers in early summer. The small blue, white or purple flowers attract a range of insects, including butterflies. Grow in well-drained soil, in a sunny position.
