Mirabilis jalapa

Mirabilis jalapa (four o'clock, marvel of Peru) is a tuberous perennial native to tropical America, now widely naturalized and cultivated worldwide. The fleshy tuberous root produces a bushy clump up to 1 m tall with ovate to triangular leaves. From summer into autumn it bears abundant fragrant tubular flowers in white, pink, red, yellow or bicolour combinations, opening in late afternoon (hence its name) and closing by morning; a single plant can bear differently coloured flowers. Easy and free-flowering, it grows in full sun on ordinary, well-drained soil, and can be grown as an annual or kept frost-free over winter.
