Montbretia

Montbretia is the common name given to garden hybrids of Crocosmia, chiefly derived from Crocosmia × crocosmiiflora, raised in France in 1880 by Victor Lemoine by crossing C. aurea with C. pottsii (then classified as Montbretia pottsii, hence the name). These cormous plants form clumps of sword-shaped foliage from which long, arching stems emerge in summer, bearing spikes of star- or funnel-shaped flowers ranging from yellow to orange and red across cultivars. Grow in full sun, in rich, moist soil; hardy, with a winter mulch recommended further north.
