Moraea alpina

Moraea alpina (Iridaceae) grows at high altitude in southern Africa, in KwaZulu-Natal, Lesotho and the former Transkei, on open rocky sites and montane grassland. Like other Moraea species, it arises from a corm wrapped in fibrous tunics, with one or two narrow leaves. The plant produces a slender stem bearing the genus's typical flowers, with six spreading tepals, the three outer ones larger than the inner, marked with contrasting nectar guides. Flowering occurs in the Southern Hemisphere spring-summer. It needs full sun, well-drained soil, and the cool, moist conditions typical of the high-altitude grasslands where it grows in the wild.
