Moraea bituminosa

Endemic to the Western Cape, South Africa, from Bredasdorp in the southeast to Wellington and Tulbagh in the north, Moraea bituminosa grows on sandstone and granite slopes, in both fynbos and renosterveld. This cormous geophyte, 25-30 cm tall and sticky to the touch, bears two leaves. From October to December it produces yellow flowers with deep yellow nectar guides and tepals 20-32 mm long, opening in the afternoon. It requires well-drained stony, sandy or clay-gravel soil and the sunny exposure typical of the Cape's Mediterranean climate.
