Moraea thomsonii

Widespread from Ethiopia to the Eastern Cape, across eastern and southern Africa, Moraea thomsonii grows in upland grassland and herbaceous vegetation. This cormous Iridaceae reaches 15 to 25 cm tall, with a corm 1-3 cm across wrapped in coarse dark brown fibres that often bear cormlets. It produces a single thread-like leaf, usually withered or absent by flowering time. The star-shaped flowers, typical of the genus, open in early afternoon. Grown from seed, the plant takes several years to reach flowering size. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
