Moraea venenata

Native to the Northern Cape in South Africa, Moraea venenata is a cormous plant in the Iridaceae family, closely related to M. polystachya, with which it shares a dangerous toxicity to livestock. The leaves, 10–30 mm wide with thickened, yellowish margins, form a characteristic cup-like structure at the base. In autumn it bears sky-blue flowers veined with purple and marked with a yellow throat. It grows in a sunny position, in well-drained soil, and becomes dormant after flowering.
