Moraea vespertina

Discovered near Nieuwoudtville in the winter-rainfall regions of the Northern Cape, South Africa, where it grows in seasonally waterlogged, doleritic clay soils, Moraea vespertina is a cormous plant in the iris family, notable for its tall stature (70 to 100 cm). Its large flowers, white or slate-blue depending on the population, are fragrant and open only in the evening, roughly from 6 to 8 pm, hence the epithet 'vespertina.' Flowering occurs from September to November. It grows well in full sun, in heavy soil that retains moisture during growth, with a dry summer rest period.
