Moraea virgata (Hexaglottis)

Found on shale and granite soils from southern Namaqualand and the western Karoo to Port Elizabeth, South Africa, Moraea virgata (formerly placed in the genus Hexaglottis, as Hexaglottis virgata) reaches about 80 cm tall. This cormous Iridaceae resembles Moraea lewisiae but differs in its slender-tubed flowers and an ovary enclosed within the bracts. Like other members of this group, it has narrow strap-shaped leaves and short-lived yellow flowers that face upwards, with a style bearing thread-like branches extending between the stamens. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
