Muscari armeniacum Saffier

Native to the Caucasus and Anatolia, Muscari armeniacum is a small bulbous plant widely naturalised across Europe. The cultivar 'Saffier', an RHS Award of Garden Merit holder, produces in spring a dense conical raceme 6-8 cm long of violet-blue buds edged in white that never fully open, extending the display. Narrow, fleshy leaves emerge in autumn. Unlike the type species, 'Saffier' sets no seed and spreads only by bulb division, making it far less invasive in the garden. Easy to grow in full sun and well-drained soil.
