Muscari botryoides botryoides

Muscari botryoides is native to central and south-eastern Europe as far as the Caucasus, growing in mountain meadows and open woodland margins. Its small bulb produces narrow, channelled, linear leaves emerging in autumn. In spring, a 15-20 cm stem bears a dense, rounded raceme of small globe-shaped flowers, bright blue to violet, topped by paler sterile flowers that give it a miniature grape-cluster appearance - hence its name. Hardy and easy to grow, it thrives in full sun or light shade in well-drained soil and naturalises readily.
