Muscari botryoides

Native to central and south-eastern Europe, Muscari botryoides grows in open woodland and mountain meadows. This small bulb, 8-20 cm tall, bears 2-4 rigid, linear leaves and produces in May-June a dense spike of tiny, almost spherical, sapphire-blue flowers gathered into a cluster resembling a miniature bunch of grapes. The nodding, fertile lower flowers contrast with the paler, upright, sterile flowers at the top. Hardy and easy to grow, it thrives in well-drained soil in sun to part shade and naturalises readily in grassy areas.
