Neomarica fluminensis

Neomarica fluminensis belongs to a Neotropical genus of rhizomatous Iridaceae native to Brazil, where the epithet "fluminensis" refers to Rio de Janeiro state. Like other Neomarica, it forms clumps of broad, strap-shaped green leaves topped by flattened stems almost indistinguishable from the foliage until the buds appear; after flowering, small plantlets root at the tip of the spent scapes. The blooms, of the "walking iris" type, are short-lived but succeed one another over a long season. More tropical in temperament than its iris-like flowers suggest, it needs cool, humus-rich soil, part shade, and frost-free winter protection.
