Nivenia levynsias

Nivenia levynsiae, endemic to South Africa, grows in rocky grassland and fynbos scrub. It is a small evergreen shrub, one of the Cape's "woody irises," reaching about 1 m tall, with narrow, lanceolate, glossy dark green leaves and small white flowers. Like other Nivenia species, it has a woody underground caudex and belongs, together with the related genera Klattia and Witsenia, to a small group of shrubby Iridaceae confined to the Cape region. Cultivation requires well-drained, acid to neutral soil and a sunny position, mimicking natural fynbos conditions.
