Sparaxis occineus

Category photo (no photo of its own for this entry)
Sparaxis, here in a scarlet-red flowered form (a colour sometimes labelled "coccinea"), is a cormous genus from South Africa, in the Iridaceae family, nicknamed the "harlequin flower" for its bright, contrasting colours. The star-shaped flowers, often marked with a throat of a different colour, open in spring above pleated, fan-shaped foliage. Grown in well-drained soil, full sun, with a dry summer rest typical of Cape bulbs.
