Distributed from Mexico (Hidalgo, Veracruz, Puebla, Oaxaca, Chiapas) south to Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Panama, Odontoglossum bictoniense (now Rhynchostele bictoniensis) grows between 2000 and 3200 m elevation, epiphytically on trees in humid forest, as a lithophyte on cliffs, or occasionally terrestrially. Its elliptic, laterally compressed pseudobulbs bear a single leaf. From autumn into winter, a tall spike bears numerous flowers with olive-green sepals and petals heavily washed brown, and a showy, heart-shaped pink or purple lip. It requires cold to cool, bright, well-ventilated growing conditions.
