Olsynium filifolium

Native to the Falkland Islands — where it is the only member of the iris family to occur naturally, and serves as the national flower — as well as to Patagonia, Olsynium filifolium (formerly classified in the genus Sisyrinchium) is a bulbous-cormous perennial 10 to 30 cm tall, with fine linear leaves. In late spring and early summer it produces delicately scented, bell-shaped, nodding flowers, 1.5 to 4 cm across, cream-white veined with pale purplish-red. It grows in colonies across grassland and dwarf-shrub heath, thriving in well-drained soil and full sun, and tolerates cold well.
