Ophrys bombyliflora, the bumblebee orchid, is a terrestrial orchid of the Mediterranean basin, found from Portugal and the Canary Islands to Turkey and Lebanon. It grows from two underground tubers in calcareous soils, favouring sunny meadows and coastal slopes. A rosette of dark green oval leaves precedes, from February to May, a flowering stem bearing one to three relatively large blooms with rounded green sepals and a swollen, brownish-purple three-lobed lip that mimics a bumblebee to attract pollinators. It requires well-drained, calcareous soil and full sun, with a dry summer dormancy after flowering.
