Bletilla striata (syn. B. hyacinthina, Orchidaceae) is a hardy terrestrial orchid native to China, Japan and Korea. It forms a clump of pleated, lance-shaped leaves and, in spring, sends up stems bearing several star-shaped flowers, purplish-pink with a purple-streaked lip, occasionally white. It is among the easiest garden orchids to grow. Grow in part shade, in humus-rich, well-drained soil kept moist during the growing season; hardy to around -15 °C with good winter mulch.
