Iris orchioides

Category photo (no photo of its own for this entry)
Iris orchioides is a bulbous species of the Juno group (subgenus Scorpiris), native to the Tien Shan mountains of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, where it grows in rocky terrain. In spring, each 15-30 cm stem bears up to three yellow flowers, ranging from pale to deep yellow, with a darker crest and signal patch. Broad winged falls distinguish it from the closely related Iris bucharica. It thrives in full sun with sharply drained soil and needs a dry summer dormancy, like most Central Asian bulbous irises.
