Ornithogalum balansae

Native to Turkey and the Caucasus, Ornithogalum balansae is a small bulbous star-of-Bethlehem forming a pair of narrow, almost prostrate basal leaves about 10 cm long. In spring, a short upright stem carries a loose cluster of 2 to 5 star-shaped, glistening white flowers striped green on the reverse, with a shining green centre and yellow anthers. Miniature and early-flowering, it is ideal for rock gardens and pots. It needs well-drained soil, a sunny position and a dry summer rest.
