Ornithogalum conicum

Endemic to the southwestern Cape Province of South Africa, Ornithogalum conicum is a bulbous Asparagaceae with deciduous green foliage. It flowers in late spring, from November to December in its native range, producing conical inflorescences of pure white flowers with pointed, spreading but never recurved sepals, lacking the dark centre seen in the related O. thyrsoides. Also grown as a cut flower for its long vase life, it requires well-drained soil and a sunny position, with a dry summer dormancy after the foliage yellows. The bulb is toxic, particularly to livestock.
