Ornithogalum nutans

Native to central and eastern Europe and now naturalised in western Europe, Ornithogalum nutans (Asparagaceae) is a bulbous plant of meadows, woodland edges and shaded gardens. The bulb produces glaucous green, linear leaves marked with a white midrib. In spring a 20-40 cm stem bears a loose, one-sided raceme of nodding, bell-shaped flowers, silvery white striped with green on the reverse of the tepals. It grows in sun to part shade, in cool, well-drained soil, and becomes dormant in summer after flowering.
