Pancratium maritimum — Lis de mer.

Rather unsual to find an evergreen bulb originating from the Mediterranean area. This protected species is found on the Mediterranean beaches; sunk deep down in the sand (very often to 30-40 cm) to find humidity and cool summer temperatures. This explains how in de middle of summer these brillant white Narcissus -like flowers with an unforgettable scent can flourish. The seeds float easily for a long time in water, which explains that this species is often found near the beaches. 19/11/05: " Needs to be planted very deep to avoid high temperature which may abort the flowers. That is why it is not easy to grow them in pots. In our garden is a large clump in a dry terassed rockery. Most of the years the leaves stay throughout the summer and flowers in July a nd August. This year the rockery became extremely dry and the leaves died off. Surprisingly in the middle of August appeared 15-20 flowerstalks. The lesson is to plant deep in the open sunny ground which should be kept dry during July and August. The best planting périod is during the summer months. Exceptionally we have a small stock dormant availalble during february 2016.
