Patersonii occidentalis

Endemic to southern Australia (Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania), Patersonia occidentalis grows on well-drained sandy soils, often near the coast. This clump-forming, evergreen Iridaceae forms tufts of narrow, strap-shaped, blue-green leaves, from which flowering stems up to 1 m tall arise. The three-petalled, satiny violet-purple flowers open from spring to early summer; each lasts only a day but is produced in succession. Hardy and drought-tolerant once established, it requires full sun and free-draining soil.
