The genus Pelargonium includes about 280 species, over 80% of them endemic to southern Africa, with a centre of diversity in the Cape region and Namaqualand. Its name, from the Greek pelargos ('stork'), refers to the fruit's resemblance to a bird's beak. The genus shows extraordinary diversity of form: succulent-stemmed species, geophytes with an underground tuber, shrubs and herbaceous perennials, adapted to habitats ranging from fynbos to semi-desert. The zygomorphic, five-petalled flowers come in a wide range of colours. Cultivation generally requires full sun and free-draining soil, with drought tolerance in the succulent and geophytic species.
