Cyclamen persicum (Primulaceae) is a tuberous plant native to the eastern Mediterranean, from Greece and Crete to Cyprus, Turkey, Lebanon, Israel and Tunisia. From winter to spring it bears fragrant flowers with swept-back petals, white to deep pink, above heart-shaped leaves marbled with silver. It is the wild species from which all pot-grown florist's cyclamens derive. Not very hardy, it is frost-tender. Grow in part shade, in well-drained soil; outdoors only in mild climates, otherwise in pots kept frost-free.
