Phaedranassa carmiolii

Rediscovered in Costa Rica after long being thought extinct, Phaedranassa carmiolii is the only representative of the Andean genus Phaedranassa found outside Colombia and Ecuador. This bulbous Amaryllidaceae, with a brown-tunicated bulb and contractile roots, produces glossy green or glaucous elliptic leaves and an umbel of large tubular pink to red flowers banded with green, carried on an erect stem. It grows in mountain habitats, along roadsides and forest edges of Andean valleys. It requires bright to part-shaded light, cool, well-drained soil, and a marked rest period after flowering.
