Phaedranassa cinerea — Queen Lily
Large bulbs which grow in clumps just below the surface of the soil. Large oval grey-green leaves tapering at base with a petiole appear at the same time as the flowers in May.The pink tubular flowers with green tips are carried on 30-40 cm stems and set attractive shaped seed-pods. It enjoys a free-draining organic potting mix. It is best grown in pots and in openground outdoors in the milder areas. I have been told by some experts that the correct name of our stock is P carmiolii, which remains to be checked up.
The genus
The genus includes 9 species, 6 of which are found only in Ecuador, the remaining three being from Colombia, Costa Rica and Peru. They are largely mountain species, where they grow in disturbed areas, often colonizing road cuts, and usually coming into bloom after the dry summer season in their native lands. Theseplants are characterized by petiolated glossy green, or greyish green leaves. The umbels with 5-15 flowers, mostly large tubular with pink, yellow or red variously banded in green.
