Pterostylis coccinea

Endemic to eastern Australia (New South Wales and north-eastern Victoria), Pterostylis coccinea, the scarlet greenhood, is a deciduous, tuberous terrestrial orchid of forest floors. An underground tuber gives rise to a rosette of two to five dark green, egg-shaped leaves, then an 8–22 cm stem bearing several stem leaves and a single 4–5 cm flower, white and bluish-green or white and red, leaning forward. Flowering occurs from summer to autumn in its native range. It requires shade to part shade, humus-rich, well-drained forest soil, and dormancy after flowering.
