Allium pulchellum, now usually classified as Allium carinatum subsp. pulchellum (Amaryllidaceae), is native to the Mediterranean region as far as the Baltic. A bulbous perennial, it forms rapidly spreading clumps and bears tall, nodding summer stems carrying loose umbels packed with numerous purple bell-shaped flowers, to fine effect. Easy to grow in full sun, in fertile, well-drained soil; rich in nectar, it attracts bees and other pollinators.
