Arum purpureospathum (Araceae) is an arum endemic to southwestern Crete, only described in 1987. Its deep green, glossy, arrow-shaped leaves appear in autumn and persist through winter, followed in spring by a striking inflorescence with a deep purple-black spathe and an almost black spadix, giving off a musky, fetid odour that attracts pollinating insects. It grows in short grassland among stones. Grow in well-drained soil, in full sun or part shade, keeping dry during summer dormancy; sensitive to hard frost.
