The genus Rhodohypoxis (family Hypoxidaceae) comprises about six small tuberous species native to the highlands of southern Africa, notably the Drakensberg range and the Lesotho plateau, in a summer-rainfall region. The exact species grown here could not be determined. These dwarf plants, 2-15 cm tall, grow in shallow soil pockets on high-altitude granite outcrops. Their narrow, grey-green leaves are topped in summer by small, six-petalled, star-shaped flowers in white, pink, or red, distinguished by a sharp bend that almost closes the floral tube. The plant becomes dormant in winter.
