Native to the cloud forests of southern Mexico (Oaxaca, Chiapas) through to Guatemala, this plant, long classified in the genus Rigidella and now placed within Tigridia, is a cormous plant in the Iridaceae family. Pointed, pleated, sword-shaped leaves precede a succession of vivid red, tubular flowers, with three large segments and three shorter ones, secreting sugary nectar that attracts pollinating hummingbirds. Flowering occurs in summer. It requires a part-shaded position, cool, well-drained soil, and is frost-tender.
