Romulea bulbicodium

Widespread across the Mediterranean basin — southern Europe, North Africa, the Near East and as far as Sudan — Romulea bulbocodium (sometimes spelled bulbicodium) is a cormous geophyte growing in rocky or sandy places, sometimes forming dense colonies. Its fine, thread-like leaves accompany tubular flowers 2 to 3 cm long, among the largest in the genus, violet-purple with a white-and-yellow throat, carried on short wiry stems. Flowering extends from February to May. It requires well-drained soil, a sunny position, and a dry summer rest following corm dormancy.
