Romulea komsbergensis

Endemic to the Roggeveld Escarpment in South Africa's Cape Province, Romulea komsbergensis grows on damp, loamy clay flats. This small geophytic Iridaceae, with a rounded corm bearing grooved basal teeth angled to one side, reaches only 8 to 12 cm in height. Magenta flowers open in August-September, each marked with a narrow blue band around a yellow throat that is brown at the base. Grown from seed, it takes about four years to reach flowering size. Like other Romulea, it needs full sun and sharp winter drainage, with a dry summer rest.
