Romulea monticola

Growing in sandy loam in fynbos of the northwestern Cape, South Africa, Romulea monticola flowers from winter into spring. This cormous Iridaceae reaches 10 to 25 cm tall. Its small flowers are golden yellow, often with a deeper yellow cup and darker veins in the throat; the bracts are green or purplish-brown, the inner one with broad membranous margins. The corm, rounded at the base, bears strongly curved basal teeth, often bent or broken. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position, with a dry summer rest.
