Romulea tortuosa

Category photo (no photo of its own for this entry)
Native to South Africa, Romulea tortuosa is a small perennial geophyte only 3 to 6 cm tall, its oval corm enclosed in a rigid brown tunic. Its 3 to 4 stiff, awl-shaped basal leaves are coiled like corkscrews, giving the species its name. In late winter and spring it produces 2 to 3 nearly stemless, fragrant, bright yellow flowers, sometimes marked with six brown blotches at the base of the egg-shaped perianth lobes. It requires well-drained soil, a sunny position, and a dry summer dormancy typical of the South African climate.
