Nicknamed the tiger orchid, Rossioglossum grande is native to southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and Honduras, where it grows epiphytically in montane forest up to about 2700 m elevation. Its grey-green, ovoid pseudobulbs bear two leaves and give rise in winter to clusters of four to eight large flowers, up to 13 cm across, glossy bright yellow heavily barred with brown, with a white lip sometimes flecked red-brown. The plant needs hot, humid summers followed by a cool, dry winter rest, bright light, and a well-drained epiphytic potting mix.
