Category photo (no photo of its own for this entry)
Native to coastal sands in the southern Western and Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa, Satyrium princeps is a striking tuberous terrestrial orchid reaching up to 86 cm in height, with two broad, fleshy, oval leaves lying flat against the ground. In the southern spring and early summer it produces a dense spike of 8 to 44 carmine-red to rose-pink flowers, with spurs 14 to 22 mm long, pollinated by sunbirds. Threatened in its natural habitat, it thrives in well-drained sandy soil, full sun, and a dry summer rest period.
