Scilla verna

Scilla verna (spring squill) is a small bulbous perennial native to the coasts of western Europe, especially the rocky shores and maritime heaths of Britain and Ireland. The small, ovoid bulb, 10-15 mm across, produces two to seven narrow leaves and a short, 5-15 cm stem bearing, from spring into early summer (chiefly April-May), a tight cluster of small, star-shaped, violet-blue, six-tepalled flowers. Highly salt-tolerant, it grows in short turf and thin soil exposed to sea spray. It thrives in full sun on well-drained, even poor soil, making it well suited to coastal gardens or rockeries.
