snake’s head

Category photo (no photo of its own for this entry)
Known in particular as the snake's head iris, because of the almost velvety dark colouring of its falls, this plant corresponds to Hermodactylus tuberosus, native to the Mediterranean basin, with a finger-like tuberous rhizome similar to that of an iris. Fine, four-angled leaves accompany iris-like flowers from late winter onward, yellowish green with blackish-brown veining. It grows in full sun, well-drained, calcareous soil, and needs a dry summer rest.
